Reflections… a Scripture verse and inspiration for daily living [7/3/18]

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2+Corinthians+3%3A7-18&version=NIV
Passage: 2 Corinthians 3:7-18
Verse: 2 Corinthians 3:18 (NIV)
And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

It is the Spirit of the Lord, living within a believer, which allows a believer to reflect the character and nature of God to others. But we, with our imperfections, do not always allow for a clear reflection to be seen.  Sometimes those imperfections are removed through the fires found while living in a fallen world such as ours.  At other times, those imperfections can only be skimmed off the surface of a tarnished heart when we take the time to slow down and listen to the wee small voice that is trying to break free from within.  May we be open to the transforming power of the Holy Spirit to renew, shape, and guide us to be better reflectors of God’s love in this world.  (inspired by Reflecting God – Devotions for Holy Living, WordAction Publishing Company)

Reflections… a Scripture verse and inspiration for daily living [7/2/18]

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John+6%3A52-65&version=NIV
Passage: John 6:52-65
Verse: John 6:63 (NIV)
The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life.

What a precious gift we have been given!  The Holy Spirit lives inside the heart of each believer.  How blessed we are when we can feel the Holy Spirit’s presence in our lives, but how forlorn we can become when He seems so far away.  May we faithfully seek Him.  May we grow to hear His voice more clearly with each passing day.  May we treasure the guidance and reassurance he provides.  (inspired by Reflecting God – Devotions for Holy Living, WordAction Publishing Company)

Reflections… a Scripture verse and inspiration for daily living [7/1/18]

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2+Corinthians+2%3A12-3%3A6&version=NIV
Passage: 2 Corinthians 2:12-3:6
Verse: 2 Corinthians 3:6 (NIV)
He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

As Christians, we are all ministers of a new covenant – the gospel of Jesus the Christ, a message of love for God and others.  God has done, and is doing, a work in each one of us.  He is preparing us to serve Him, to help build His kingdom, and to share the gospel message with others.  May we, through the work and guidance of the Holy Spirit, spread a message of life in Christ to those seeking after such things.  May the covenant be written upon our hearts, but an open book for all to see and read.  (inspired by Reflecting God – Devotions for Holy Living, WordAction Publishing Company)

Reflections… a Scripture verse and inspiration for daily living to begin again

I am planning to begin posting a daily devotional again.  I hope you will find them thought provoking and encouraging.  I had planned to begin on July 1, but am a little behind.  This may happen from time to time, but the intention is to post one each day.  I will be posting a couple each day to catch up.

May your 4th of July be blessed.  May the Lord be gracious to you, your family, your friends, and your nation… all these things and more in the name of Jesus, to the glory of the Father, and empowered by the Holy Spirit.

River Run Church of the Nazarene Annual Report: April 1, 2017 through March 31, 2018

The River Run Church of the Nazarene faced a number of challenges last year.  Due to renovations, we were temporarily displaced from our regular meeting place in the Detroit Town Office Building from the beginning of April through the end of June.  We were able to hold regular Sunday church activities in an alternate location, but most of our ministries suffered during this time.

Liability concerns, expressed by the selectmen, required us to remove any food stored in the building.  Additionally, we had to discontinue the supplemental food pantry that we operated from there.  The kitchen facilities have not been fully restored, so the free community dinners we offered have been put on hold.  We restarted a few of our outreach ministries in the fall and hope we can regain momentum.

Our relationship with the Town of Detroit has changed.  We no longer provide basic cleaning in return for the use of the building on Sundays.  Instead, we pay rent for church activities on Sunday, but are able to use the building at other times for public programs or activities, free of charge, as can other non-profit organizations.

This winter we spent time planning, refocusing, and redefining how we will do ministry in the future.  We plan to increase our online ministries, will take many of our church activities out into the community, and are exploring options for additional outreach activities or community based small groups.

In spite of these challenges, we were able to plant, manage, and harvest produce from the community garden.  A core group of six volunteers distributed about 1250 pounds of garden produce to twenty five households… feeding at least 60 people from eight different area towns.  We expect to be scaling back on our community garden activities in 2018, in part, because we will be relocating the River Run raised beds to an alternate location that will be easier to manage and maintain.

River Run Church of the Nazarene’s 2017 Community Garden Report

The River Run Church of the Nazarene, assisted by a University of Maine Cooperative Extension staff member, planned, planted, managed, and harvested a community garden in Detroit, Maine for the second year.  Additional funding from the Kohl’s Cares About ME Program this year helped the River Run Church of the Nazarene expand its capacity, through the community garden project, to address food insecurity issues in the Sebasticook Valley area.

A commitment of time and energy from a core group of six volunteers, from four area towns, made this project possible.  Additionally, this core group was assisted by seven other community volunteers during the 2017 growing season.

This year, about 1250 pounds of garden produce was harvested and distributed to area residents from the twenty 3X5 raised beds in the community garden.  Twenty five households, from eight different area towns, received garden produce throughout the growing season.  Five multi-generational families, nine adult households, three families with children, five elderly person households, and three single individual households were served in 2017.  These households reflected a total of at least 60 people.  A few of the households received produce once or twice during the growing season, but most households received produce on a regular basis throughout the season.

In the fall, we prepared the beds for the winter months.  We are currently making plans for the 2018 growing season.
